    The following are the purposes of the conference:

      Upon completion of the conference, participants will be able to:

    1. Analyze and discuss the effects of colonialism on indigenous health as well as the meaning of indigenous sovereignty over health.
    2. Identify not only the risk factors, but also cultural factors that must be considered in the successful management of chronic disease in indigenous populations.
    3. Identify key health disparities that affect indigenous populations and discuss ways to correct them.
    4. Communicate more effectively with patients about the use of traditional healing methodologies as well as communicate more effectively with traditional healers.
    5. Upon completion of the medical education workshop, participants will be able to formulate effective curricular strategies around indigenous health and cultural competency, as well as effective assessment strategies and/or assessment tools.
    6. Upon completion of the research workshop, participants will be able to initiate more effective, culturally appropriate research in indigenous communities, particularly as it relates to community participatory and interventional research.

    The Hawaii Consortium for Continuing Medical Education designates this educational activity for a maximum of 22 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

    The Hawaii Consortium for Continuing Medical Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
