The conference will start with two ½ day workshops on June 11- 12, 2008. The workshops are designed to foster discussion and sharing. We are proposing that each workshop produce a discussion paper. One workshop will focus on medical education related topics. Topics to be covered include introducing indigenous health curriculum into medical schools as well as Cultural Competency related topics. The second day will focus on assessment and evaluation challenges and strategies for indigenous related and cultural competency curricula. The second workshop will focus on research related topics. First day will focus on challenges related to recruitment and retention of indigenous researchers. The second day will focus on community based participatory research and as well as interventional research related topics. Workshops will be held at the Waimea Plantation Cottages.
The main conference, occurring on June 13-15, 2008 will feature plenary, breakout and poster sessions. Plenary sessions will be held at the Waimea Theater, a short walk from the Waimea Plantation Cottages. (For information on the historic Waimea Theater, you may go to www.waimeatheater.com). Plenary sessions will feature panel presentations on a wide range of topics including sovereignty and health, public health, chronic disease especially cardiovascular disease, pediatrics, mental health, traditional healing, medical education and research.
Breakout sessions will follow thematic “streams.” Examples of themes include: sovereignty and health, public health, cancer, pediatrics, cardiovascular disease, medical education, research, work force development, renal disease, obesity and traditional healing. The breakout sessions will take place at Waimea High School next door to the theater.
Poster sessions, although not eligible for CME Category 1 credit, are an important part of any PRIDoC. Many of the posters follow the same themes although a few introduce new topics. The sessions will be broken up into two “streams” and they will be held at the Waimea Plantation Cottages.
